I love it when life presents amazing unexpected connections and coincidences.
Years ago my best friend introduced me to John Copper Clarke, a performance and “punk” poet.
And I became a massive fan.
I have been to many of his gigs. I was so happy to meet and talk to him at his book signing at the Waterstones London event just after Covid.
It was from this conversation with John that I learnt about Yana, a British singer, model, and actress from the 1950s. I became fascinated by her but that is another story.
It was John Copper Clarke’s poem that was read at my best friend’s funeral that resonated so much with me https://genius.com/John-cooper-clarke-the-day-the-world-stood-still-lyrics.
Staying with my friends this year, I discovered for myself the Arctic Monkeys album AM. I bought a copy of the album at https://vinilo.co.uk/
How amazingly surprised I was to find the last song in the album – I Wanna Be Yours – by John Cooper Clarke! It only took me years to find it (released in 2013) but better later than never 🙂
In a recent interview, John said he hated being called national treasure https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gpyjng041o.
In the eyes of many of his fans including me, he is a LEGEND.
I can’t find a better way to finish this other than with ………………
I Wanna Be Yours… by John Cooper Clarke
I wanna be your vacuum cleaner
breathing in your dust
I wanna be your Ford Cortina
I will never rust
If you like your coffee hot
let me be your coffee pot
You call the shots
I wanna be yours
I wanna be your raincoat
for those frequent rainy days
I wanna be your dreamboat
when you want to sail away
Let me be your teddy bear
take me with you anywhere
I don’t care
I wanna be yours
I wanna be your electric meter
I will not run out
I wanna be the electric heater
you’ll get cold without
I wanna be your setting lotion
hold your hair in deep devotion
Deep as the deep Atlantic ocean
that’s how deep my devotion
With Love as Always,
Yana De Lilac
