There’s a unique joy that only the sea can bring, a feeling that fills me with happiness like nothing else. It’s a connection that I’ve come to cherish, a bond that I’ve nurtured through my travels and experiences.
The place where I feel one with the Universe and enjoy the moment.
August was the month I decided to embrace a new challenge-to immerse myself in the sea as often as possible. Southampton, my home, is a bustling seaport, but it lacks a traditional beach. This led me to embark on a journey of exploration, seeking out nearby coastal gems.
Among these, Cowes on the Isle of Wight stood out as a charming destination. A mere ferry ride away from Southampton, this picturesque town is a delightful place to spend a day. Its quaint streets, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sound of seagulls, are lined with unique shops, inviting cafes, and delectable restaurants, adding to its allure.
Cowes has a narrow stretch of pebble beach in the main promenade area.
Getting into the sea with many rocks can be painful, so I recommend proper shoes. You also have many yachts and boats nearby.
Cowes has got to be my regular beach spot.
Boscombe beach near Bournemouth.
Bournemouth, with its sandy beaches, is an extremely popular destination in the summer; hence, it becomes very overcrowded during this time.
Instead, I took the train to Pokesdown (Boscombe) and walked about 20 minutes from the station to the beach. It was a weekday, and I was so pleasantly surprised. It was empty and beautiful. The sea was comfortable, fresh and clean. Perfect!
Pokesdown also has many interesting places to explore, including some amazing vintage shops.
And my absolute favourite – Hayling Island.
Hayling Island, with its retro charm and unhurried pace, is a peaceful haven. It’s a place where you can truly unwind, with the beach never feeling overcrowded and the sea offering a serene escape. The tranquillity of the island is truly calming. The sea feels fresh, clean and a bit warmer. It’s a feeling of pure bliss, a moment of escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Heavenly!
What are your favourite places for swimming in the sea?
