I started using solo travelling companies years ago, mainly because, like many other people, I was nervous about travelling on my own, especially to countries where I was not familiar with the culture.
As someone who always has my own agenda, I saw solo groups as an insurance policy – a safety net when you need it. But it also felt like a leash, limiting my freedom and independence.
Travelling with a group, I felt a certain level of obligation to spend time with the group, especially over dinners. Sometimes, someone made comments about me not joining, and it felt like pressure to me.
Solo travelling groups can be an excellent option for holidays if you are looking for social interaction, making friends, or trying a solo option for the first time.
During my solo travels, I found that I spent more time with locals, engaging in activities unique to their culture and lifestyle. I was often invited to dinners or parties, where I got to taste authentic local cuisine and learn about their traditions. While I enjoyed these experiences, they were not always well received by my travelling companions, who preferred to stick to the group’s plans.
The fact of the matter is that just because you are travelling in the same group does not mean you have things in common. And I am not the one for small talk just for the sake of it. Or justifying the way I spend my time on holidays.
Then I was talking on the way back from one of my trips to the British Airways stewardess.
“Why are you travelling with a group? You have an outgoing, warm personality that allows you to connect with anyone, by choice. You are fun and enjoy exploring. Just travel on your own,” she said. She also shared with me an inspirational story about an 85-year-old lady, who, after her husband’s passing, decided to continue living and travelling. She embarked on a solo trip to Thailand, a place she had always wanted to visit. Her story of resilience and determination inspired me to find joy in exploring on my own.
That was the conversation that changed the way I travel and sparked a journey of personal growth, freeing me from my fears and inspiring me to embrace solo travel. It’s not just about the places you see, but the person you become along the way.
With Love As Always,
