“No man is a failure if he has friends”.

It was May this year when I had a call from my friend Tanya.

“Please do not shout at me, but I have to tell you something.

I know you decided not to pursue home buying after your last unpleasant experience, and you hate the whole home searching process. I’ve been doing it secretly for you for a month, and there is a flat on the market that you have to go and view. I am sending your photos and address”

A whole range of emotions went through me while listening to this, and finally, I laughed. Fellow Aquarius, she knows that you can’t put pressure on us, but you can gently guide and communicate. The flat that she mentioned is now my own first home. She really knows me well. Tanya is the person who gently and patiently guided me towards my writing while taking care of all the back-office work. Despite having two young children, a husband, and a very demanding job, she always has time to listen and, during my emotional outbursts, calmly bring me back to reality with her advice.

Then there is Katherine, a friend who consistently reminds me how good I am at what I do when my impostor syndrome kicks in, always encouraging me to write, but at the same time giving candid feedback. Sometimes we disagree so much that the tension is scary, but we always respect each other’s views.

For me, friendship is not about agreeing and cheerleading.

It is the courage to say the truth for a higher purpose and growth; it is time to be there not only in bad times but also to celebrate successes without jealousy. And it is absolutely ok if your views on the world sometimes differ; this shows you a different angle.

To me, the quote from my favourite Christmas movie, ‘No man is a failure who has friends,’ highlights how true friendship provides a foundation for growth and resilience, as shared by the angel Clarence Odbody to George Bailey in a heartfelt message in a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

What does friendship mean to you, my dear reader? Think about the friends who have supported you through thick and thin, and how they have shaped your journey.

With Love as Always,
