On meeting Solo Travellers

It’s a rainy February night in Mannheim, Germany. I’m at a lively bar, chatting with a Swiss guy and a German guy.

Although we come from different countries and age groups and have different relationships, we all love solo travel.

I ask them, “What kind of solo travel do you do?”

“I mainly go to music events. I’m married with two kids, so travelling to these events lets me enjoy my hobby alone,” my new German friend says.

“I often book last-minute flights and hotels anywhere in the world. My girlfriend doesn’t mind. Sometimes I stay in the hotel all weekend, just watching movies and ordering room service,” my new Swiss friend adds.

There are many ways to travel alone. You can make it as social or private as you wish. Many people tell me they want to try solo travel but feel nervous about it. I felt that way too. Start small—maybe with a solo travel group or just a day trip—and give it a try.

Looking back, solo travel made me more confident and happy in my own company. As Carrie from Sex and the City says, “The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself.” I completely agree.

With Love as Always,
